Controversy Surrounding Smithsonian’s Historical Approach

Fox News host Laura Ingraham has raised concerns about the Smithsonian Institution’s approach to history, alleging it pursues a divisive ‘activist agenda’ that negatively portrays America. She pointed to Anthea Hartig’s testimony, director of the National Museum of American History, about education materials and controversial exhibits such as an alleged ‘fetish attire’ display and the exclusion of pro-life history. Ingraham questioned the use of taxpayer funds for these initiatives.

The Trump administration claims to have found evidence of the Smithsonian violating federal nondiscrimination laws, as shared in a letter by the Department of the Interior (DOI). The letter to the Smithsonian suggests a significant violation of federal antidiscrimination law, including creating a hostile environment and engaging in discriminatory practices based on race and ethnicity.

Although specific evidence was not cited in the letter, a Fox News Digital investigation revealed that many Smithsonian leaders, including those involved in hiring, support diversity, equity, and inclusion, described by the Trump administration as racially discriminatory.

President Donald Trump voiced criticism on Truth Social, accusing the Smithsonian of being ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ and ‘woke.’ He signed an executive order directing officials to remove ‘improper ideology’ from museums. This order emphasized the necessity for governmental authorities to restore trust in the Smithsonian Institution.

The Smithsonian is reviewing a White House letter that announces a probe into museum content for potential ‘divisive or partisan narratives.’ While liberals view conservative criticisms as attempts to influence history presentation, the administration is contemplating withdrawing support unless issues are addressed.

The threats differ from the conflict over the Smithsonian’s substantial federal funding. Debates surround the allocation of taxpayer funds as GOP leaders demand accountability, accusing the museum of presenting ‘woke revisionist history.’

The DOI’s letter indicated that without significant leadership and ideological changes, the Smithsonian might lose continued support, such as artifact loans for exhibits and discretionary grants.

The Smithsonian operates independently but is overseen by board members appointed by congressional resolutions signed into law by the president. The administration may leverage new openings on the board to exercise influence.

The DOI requests Smithsonian representatives to meet with administration officials to discuss alleged biases and civil rights violations. At a congressional hearing, Anthea Hartig stated that the museum does not take sides in political debates, preserving American life’s breadth to allow public conclusions.

Recent reports show backgrounds in liberal advocacy among museum leadership and curators. Allegations extend to the Smithsonian-run National Zoo, said to emphasize DEI and gender equity. The Smithsonian has not commented on the letter as of Thursday. The White House also did not respond to inquiries by Fox News Digital.
