A tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Two people were killed and another injured following a shooting that led to chaos among shoppers.
The Dearborn Police Chief, Issa Shahin, reported that the violence erupted from a conflict between two groups of young individuals familiar with one another. This altercation escalated into gunfire. Both groups possessed handguns, and authorities do not consider the incident random.
The shooting took place at approximately 1:25 p.m. local time. CBS News Detroit detailed that one individual died at the scene inside the mall, while another succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. A third victim was also hospitalized, as reported by CBS. The victims were young men, likely in their late teens or early 20s.
Panic and Evacuation
The sound of gunfire led to panic within the mall, resulting in evacuation efforts as police arrived. A social media video appeared to show people fleeing after hearing shots, based on The Associated Press. In the commotion, one person was hit by a vehicle outside the mall, according to CBS.
Several individuals tied to the incident were questioned by police, but no arrests were made immediately. Shahin stated there was no motive identified, nor evidence suggesting a robbery connection. Authorities confirmed there was no further threat to the public, with Michigan State Police assisting in the investigation. The mall will remain closed while investigators examine the scene.
“It’s completely unacceptable. For it to happen anywhere is unacceptable,” Shahin told CBS News Detroit. “The idea that it would happen in a public space, a mall, where people shop, is unconscionable. It’s unbelievable.”
Fairlane Town Center, located near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road, hosts over 125 stores and eateries. Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with a population exceeding 100,000, is situated roughly 9 miles west of the city.
