Des Bishop, a native of New York City, has taken an atypical route to success in the comedy world. His journey led him from Queens to Ireland and China before returning to the United States. After coming back during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bishop noted how performing across the U.S. elevated his comedy.
Bishop moved to Ireland at age 14 and remained there until he returned to the U.S. in his mid-40s. Throughout his career, he has performed stand-up in several languages and styles. Now, he has returned to Manhattan’s Comedy Cellar for his latest Hulu special, Bridge and Tunnel, which will be available for free on YouTube on July 10. This is his seventh comedy special but only his second in America.
I’ve had a lot of specials due to my career in Ireland about which Americans are mostly unaware. It’s odd since I’m a New Yorker but spent much of my life abroad.
Performing for American audiences prompted Bishop to refine his act, moving away from the narrative style prominent in Ireland and embracing the American preference for concise, impactful jokes. The experience has honed his skills and improved his comical timing.
Bishop’s approach combines strong storytelling from his time in Ireland with the punchiness learned in American venues. He credits these experiences for creating a unique comedic style, saying, “The storytelling and the punchiness mixed together have created a strong style. America challenged me to improve creatively and skill-wise.”
His stand-up journey even took him to China, where he learned Mandarin to perform for local audiences. This exposure to diverse audiences has enriched his comedic perspective, allowing him to adapt humor to various cultural contexts.
A Return to Roots
Upon returning to the U.S., Bishop embraced his identity as a Queens native. He believes that acknowledging this authentic part of himself opened up new comedic material and expanded his repertoire.
His latest special, Bridge and Tunnel, leans into Gen X nostalgia, which resonates with audiences of his generation. Despite young audiences potentially not connecting with the nostalgic themes, Bishop stands by his content, knowing that those who relate to it enjoy it thoroughly.
Bishop also has a partner in comedy, his wife Hannah Berner. Berner, a successful comedian in her own right, offers valuable insights into social media strategies, helping Bishop amplify his reach.
Bishop and Berner’s relationship began during Berner’s stint on the Bravo reality TV show Summer House. Despite early scrutiny, their partnership has proven beneficial, particularly in sharing comedic and professional insights.
