Chris Pappas Wins Democratic Senate Nomination in New Hampshire

Rep. Chris Pappas has secured the Democratic Senate nomination in New Hampshire, a pivotal state for the Democrats in the midterm elections. His victory came against socialist contender and first-time candidate Karishma Manzur, according to the Associated Press. This election follows Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s retirement, notable for being the first woman to serve as both governor and senator.

Republican Ambitions in New Hampshire

Despite not winning a Senate election in New Hampshire for 16 years, Republicans are keen to seize this Democrat-held seat. They view the vacancy as a crucial opportunity to bolster their narrow majority during the midterms.

A Battle of Ideologies

The race between Pappas and Manzur was part of a six-month primary season, marked by the far-left’s significant victories over centrists. This signifies an ongoing debate within the Democratic Party regarding its ideological direction.

“All he wants to do is just get his little cushy job and go to D.C. Go to all these parties and these restaurants and just do whatever the bare minimum is,”

Manzur, a scientist with a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a nonprofit leader, emerged strongly in recent weeks. She campaigned for comprehensive healthcare, a minimum wage of at least $20 per hour, the abolition of ICE, and the cessation of military aid to Israel, which she said was aiding “genocide” against Palestinians.

The Support and Criticism

Manzur criticized Pappas, citing his backing from the pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC, which she deems as supporting “genocide.” Additionally, Pappas, enjoying support from establishment and unions, targets a political system favoring billionaires.

“Israel’s a historic ally of the United States, the only democracy in the region. And you can say that while you have vehement disagreements with the Netanyahu government as I’ve expressed,”

Pappas expressed concerns over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions, labeling them as reckless, and anticipates changes post-election.

Appealing to Pragmatism

Pappas has been campaigning to reshape Washington since 2018. He aims to draw in voters situated between the 20 and 80-yard line politically, emphasizing New Hampshire’s pragmatic nature.

Upcoming General Election

Pappas will face former Senators John E. Sununu or Scott Brown in the general election. Despite the heated primary, he remains confident in unifying the Democratic Party.

Pappas underscores the significance of the election, noting that it could sway Senate control. The cooperation of Democrats is vital, as retaining this seat is crucial for a majority hold.
