Guy Campanile, a former ’60 Minutes’ producer and managing editor, recently discussed his dismissal from the program earlier this year in a social media post. He asserted that his departure was due to his and his colleagues’ refusal to compromise their journalistic integrity. According to Campanile, they resisted including unverifiable information or White House talking points in their reports.
Campanile expressed that they objected to conducting interviews set up by the administration and insisted on posing tough questions to business and political leaders. He emphasized the importance of questioning authority, including their superiors, as essential to maintaining high-quality journalism.
“We did what reporters worth their salt do – we questioned authority…including our own bosses. That’s how the best newsrooms work,” he stated.
The firings occurred in May and affected several individuals, including executive producer Tanya Simon, executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, senior producer Matthew Polevoy, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. This action was part of efforts by the network’s editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, to reorganize the news program.
Campanile criticized the influence of online opinionists on established institutions like CBS News, stating that many decision-makers lack firsthand experience with significant societal issues. He expressed concern about programming decisions being driven by what may trend online.
In his private post, Campanile urged his former colleagues to stand firm and continue upholding journalistic standards despite pressures. He committed to not remaining silent as media credibility diminishes.
A spokesperson for CBS News declined to comment but referenced previous statements denying the accusations by former employees.
The program ’60 Minutes’ has produced various pieces critical of the Trump administration, addressing topics like tariffs and immigration policies. Longtime correspondent Scott Pelley was also dismissed following disagreements with Weiss and producer Nick Bilton.
