Virtual Sex Work Gains Prominence on TV

Virtual sex work on television is nothing new, but it has gained a higher profile this year. Shows like “Euphoria,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” and “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” highlight this trend.

In HBO’s “Euphoria,” the character Cassie, portrayed by Sydney Sweeney, explores her aspirations through virtual sex work. From her bedroom, Cassie films videos, personalizes items like panties, and evaluates sex toys. She tells a director, “I’m not a sex worker. I’m a performer who uses my body to tell stories.” Cassie’s transition to an OnlyFans creator showcases empowerment in a different light.

Television has broadened the portrayal of on-camera sex work. Cassie shares the spotlight with other significant characters from recent Apple TV dramas. Margo, played by Elle Fanning, is a young single mother doing cam work for extra income in “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.” Additionally, Trevor, depicted by Brandon Flynn, is a cam boy immersed in a murder mystery alongside a client played by Tatiana Maslany in “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.”

HBO’s “Industry,” which aired its fourth season in January, also incorporates a subplot about camming. The ABC comedy “Abbott Elementary” jestingly featured a teacher, played by Quinta Brunson, contemplating side work on a website named Mostly Fans in its season finale. Moreover, the Canadian series “Cam Boy” remains ongoing on OUTtv.

As this trend grows, television continues to reflect diverse narratives within virtual sex work, focusing on empowerment and choice.
