Sununu Secures GOP Senate Nomination in New Hampshire

Former Senator John E. Sununu has emerged victorious in the GOP Senate nomination race in New Hampshire, marking a significant step for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. Sununu defeated former Senator Scott Brown to proceed to the general election, as reported by the Associated Press. He aims to fill the void left by retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the pioneering woman who served as both governor and senator.

Republicans have not won a Senate seat in New Hampshire for 16 years, but they view this open seat as a critical opportunity to strengthen their position in the Senate. Sununu’s opponent in the general election will be decided between Rep. Chris Pappas and scientist Karishma Manzur, who are contending for the Democratic nomination.

The Stakes in Midterm Elections

Former Republican Senator John E. Sununu is making a comeback in the 2026 midterm elections, striving to reclaim his Senate seat. The son of former Governor John H. Sununu and brother to former Governor Chris Sununu, John E. Sununu brings a legacy of political experience.

President Donald Trump endorsed Sununu earlier this year, despite Sununu’s history as a GOP critic of Trump. Trump has publicly supported Sununu over Brown, who served as an ambassador during Trump’s presidency. Sununu also received endorsements from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Brown expressed concerns, stating, “Sununu’s got 70 endorsements on his website, but he doesn’t have the president’s. He never talks about it. He’s embarrassed by it.” Brown emphasized the importance of earning votes, saying, “I’ve had the MAGA base and many traditional Republicans for over a year. Johnny came lately, and he thinks votes will come effortlessly.”

Brown accused Sununu of being “beholden” to Trump and other outside influences. In response, Sununu asserted his dedication to New Hampshire’s people, stating, “I’ll have one job—to stand up for the people of New Hampshire every single day.” Sununu underscored his local endorsements, emphasizing grassroots support in the state.

Trump and New Hampshire Campaign Trail

Trump announced plans to support Republicans as they prepare for the midterm elections. When asked about Trump’s possible involvement in his campaign, Sununu indicated, “I don’t need anyone from outside New Hampshire to campaign for me.” His focus remains on state-level issues and cultivating local support.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who holds the distinction of being the first woman elected governor and U.S. senator in the country’s history, will retire at the end of her term.

Sununu also expressed disagreement with the Trump administration’s trade policies, particularly the trade war with Canada. He highlighted Canada’s role as a vital trading partner for New Hampshire.

As Republicans face challenges such as inflation, high gas prices, and somewhat unfavorable opinions of Trump, Sununu focuses on economic issues. He emphasizes affordability, reducing living costs related to housing, healthcare, and energy.
