An aerial view was captured at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, after a significant incident involving a chemical tank overheating last month. Federal authorities executed a search warrant at this Southern California aerospace site to investigate the overheating of a chemical tank, which prompted the evacuation of 50,000 residents due to explosion fears.

Search Warrant and Investigation Details

The warrant, signed by a federal judge, authorized the seizure of documents and records concerning the methyl methacrylate chemical involved in the incident. Additionally, samples from tanks and other containers suspected of holding hazardous substances were sought. The warrant covered equipment controlling the temperature of methyl methacrylate.

The FBI verified that agents were examining GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems in Garden Grove. Vehicles and federal agents were observed outside the facility.

Company’s Response and Community Impact

GKN Aerospace, known for producing cockpit windows and canopies, confirmed cooperation with authorities. The facility houses a tank containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, known for its flammability. This chemical finds use in manufacturing plastics and coatings. According to the EPA, exposure leads to severe health risks like respiratory and neurological problems.

The Orange County Health Care Agency is managing cleanup efforts, planning removal of the neutralized chemical once resources become available. GKN Aerospace’s representative, Steve Carlin, expressed regret to the community at a local meeting, noting the disruption caused by the incident.

Tank Overheating Incident and Response

The overheating was reported on May 21, leading to evacuations. The cooling system failed, causing the tank to heat up. Intervention stabilized the temperature, preventing a potential explosion.

Using sprinklers and technical expertise, crews managed to stabilize conditions, and a crack in the tank helped relieve pressure. Evacuation orders were lifted once the temperature stabilized.

Additional Investigations and Community Concerns

Separate from the FBI, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation, ensuring evidence is preserved.

Approximately 50,000 evacuees have initiated lawsuits against GKN Aerospace, highlighting health concerns and proximity to residential areas.

Lawsuits allege negligence by GKN Aerospace and emphasize the risk to the nearby community. Lawyers expressed satisfaction with the federal investigation’s potential to achieve justice for affected residents.

Despite lawsuits, health officials assured the public of no contamination and continue monitoring environmental safety.

Other Incidents on the West Coast

Notably, this incident coincided with another chemical emergency involving a tank rupture at a Washington paper mill.
