In Lincoln, Nebraska, a woman discovered a glitch at a gas station that led to free fuel. Authorities stated that she’s facing felony theft charges for exploiting a rewards card system.

The 45-year-old allegedly manipulated the system, costing the gas station nearly $28,000. Investigation revealed she used the scheme for several months.

The issue came to light when Bosselman Enterprises’ loss-prevention manager reported suspicious activities at the Pump & Pantry in Lincoln. A software update rolled out in November 2022 inadvertently allowed anyone double-swiping a rewards card to access demonstration mode, facilitating free gas transactions.

A probable cause statement highlighted one card being used repeatedly for complimentary fuel. Law enforcement linked the card to the accused, supported by video evidence showing her acquiring free gas from November 2022 to June 1, when the problem was resolved.

The authorities suspect the woman shared her scheme with an accomplice, charging for card access. This individual allegedly paid $500 for gas worth approximately $700.

Overall, the card saw 510 usages, leading to over 7,400 gallons of free gas dispensed. The accused is currently released on bond, awaiting her court hearing scheduled for April 11. Her attorney has been contacted for comments.
