Artists Withdraw from Concert Series Tied to Trump Organization

“The Great American State Fair” was planned as a series of concerts and activities from June 25 to July 10 on Washington’s National Mall. The event, organized by Freedom 250, a group initiated by President Donald Trump and led by Keith Krach, was set to feature performances by notable artists.

Freedom 250 announced Wednesday that Bret Michaels, the Commodores, and Martina McBride would perform, including an “I Love the ’90s” show on June 26. However, by Thursday, these artists, along with Morris Day and Young MC, withdrew from the event. Young MC had performed at the “I Love The 90’s” tour prior, captured in a photo by Rob Grabowski/Invision/AP.

Michaels shared on Instagram that he believed the event would honor veterans and hardworking Americans, but realized it had become divisive, leading to threats.

McBride echoed these concerns in her Instagram post, highlighting the misleading nature of the event’s nonpartisan claim. Young MC and the Commodores also expressed a desire not to align publicly with any political party.

Despite these withdrawals, other artists are still scheduled to appear. Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, and Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli will perform. Morvan emphasized his intent to unite people through music.

Vanilla Ice’s representative stated the rapper was honored to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary. He encouraged all to celebrate the nation’s birthday and freedom, as noted in an email to the AP.

As of this release, a Flo Rida representative has not commented on the situation.

Freedom 250 organizers have not yet addressed the artists’ withdrawals directly. However, spokeswoman Rachel Reisner stated Freedom 250 aimed to host events celebrating history and engaging Americans.

Reaction to the Trump Administration

The Trump administration has faced varied reactions from artists. While some, like Sylvester Stallone and Nicki Minaj, support him, others, such as Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen, have openly criticized him. Many artists object to their music being used in Trump rallies or videos.

Last year, Trump altered the leadership at the Kennedy Center, where he placed his name on the facade. This spurred artists like Bela Fleck and Renée Fleming to cancel planned appearances.
