Mia Sara Reflects on ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Experience

Nearly four decades after the release of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Mia Sara has shared insights into her experience while filming the iconic movie. Although the film became a beloved cultural staple, Sara’s behind-the-scenes experiences were mixed.

During a recent interview, Sara discussed her role as Sloane Peterson in the 1986 hit film. She recognized the movie’s lasting impact on audiences, but confessed her struggles while working with acclaimed director John Hughes. “I don’t really give interviews because making ‘Ferris Bueller’ was not that good an experience for me,” Sara told The Sunday Times. Despite understanding the movie’s significance to fans, her relationship with Hughes was challenging.

The 59-year-old actress described Hughes as “a strange guy.” She explained that Hughes encouraged the cast to bond through shared experiences like watching French New Wave films. While others were seasoned actors, Sara admitted she was a “snotty New York kid” already familiar with the films, which frustrated Hughes. Reflecting on her career, Sara highlighted her difficulties handling egos and lacking emotional maturity.

Sara shared her struggles in the film industry, mentioning her transition from acting to writing poetry. “I never really had the resilience to deal with the audition process,” she said. Although she felt pride in certain aspects of her career, she concluded her acting journey was generally unhappy.

Despite her mixed emotions, the cultural impact of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is undeniable. Her children often witness peers recognizing her when they connect her to the film, with remarks such as, “Wow, your mom was hot!” Sara conveyed broader frustrations with Hollywood and mentioned her discomfort with auditions, despite some career achievements.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was released in 1986, becoming a major teen comedy of the era. In the film, Matthew Broderick portrayed Ferris, who skipped school to explore Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane and best friend Cameron Frye, played by Alan Ruck. They cleverly evaded Ferris’ suspicious sister, Jeanie, played by Jennifer Grey.

Jennifer Grey had a different experience on set as she started a secret relationship with Broderick shortly after filming began, lasting nearly two years. Grey reminisced about their on-set dynamic, sharing anecdotes about uncontrollable laughter during scenes.

Sara humorously revealed her own crush on Broderick, noting it was unreciprocated. Ruck shared how his audition with Broderick secured his role, despite initial doubts from casting directors about his age.

The natural chemistry between Broderick and Ruck enhanced their portrayal of loyal sidekicks, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.
