Empowering Independent Musicians: The Story of DJ Chris Cross and Terrific Tunes

The music industry constantly changes, affecting how musicians reach and manage their audiences. Chris Marshall, also known as DJ Chris Cross, founded Terrific Tunes to support independent artists. Marshall gained experience while touring with hip-hop artists like Moneybagg Yo, Rod Wave, Yo Gotti, and YTB Fatt. His Memphis upbringing and industry knowledge inspired him to create a platform that helps artists without relying on traditional labels.

A Journey Through Music

Marshall’s path from campus DJ to music entrepreneur wasn’t straightforward. He started with elementary piano lessons and family ties to classic soul in Memphis. His grandfather, Randle Catron, a songwriter for Stax Records, influenced his early musical interest. At the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, he built a reputation by DJing parties and writing for the campus newspaper.

In 2018, as his classmates prepared to graduate, Marshall was opening shows and forming connections. These relationships taught him about show dynamics, record distribution, and artist momentum. He realized artists often lacked the knowledge needed to protect their work and build sustainable careers.

The Atlanta Influence

Moving to Atlanta expanded Marshall’s understanding of the music industry. He saw how business acumen, cultural timing, and relationships propelled success. Initially, he envisioned Terrific Tunes as a traditional music company, but it evolved into a technical and resilient support system for artists. He began assisting artists in organizing metadata, registering splits, and planning releases.

Terrific Tunes operates as a distribution and creative services company. Artists retain ownership of their music while Terrific Tunes provides support for distribution, submission, and administration. Artists receive 80% of the revenue, with Terrific Tunes taking 20% for its services. The company’s relationship with Too Lost enhances its distribution technology capabilities.

Building a Better Music Business

Marshall emphasizes the importance of ownership and data in the music industry. He teaches artists to plan releases, manage metadata, and pitch to playlists effectively. By understanding intellectual property, artists protect themselves from manipulation.

From his DJ experience, Marshall learned to read people; from distribution, he learned to read systems. Preparing for a release involves timing and organization. As a member of the Recording Academy, he watches changes like TikTok and artificial intelligence influence music discovery.

The Role of a Connector

Marshall sees himself as a connector, learning from mistakes to help others succeed. His story ties to Memphis, where he watched deals stall and the city lose momentum after Young Dolph’s death. With Terrific Tunes, he aims to provide structure for artists with ambition and an audience.

His goal isn’t to build the biggest music company but to impact independent creators positively. Marshall views his work as part of a larger mission, ensuring musicians have the freedom to decide what’s best for their careers. Understanding the business side empowers artists to make music that changes lives.
