Army Secretary Dan Driscoll Resigns Amid Tensions at the Pentagon

Resignation and Pentagon Tensions

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump. His decision followed prolonged conflicts with War Secretary Pete Hegseth. These tensions were part of broader leadership issues within the Pentagon. The focus now turns to how this will impact the U.S. military strategy, especially concerning Iran.

Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis called for replacing Pete Hegseth, criticizing his leadership after Dan Driscoll’s decision to leave.

Tillis’ Accusations

Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., openly criticized Hegseth in a post on X. Tillis praised Driscoll and former Army chief of staff, Gen. Randy George, for their innovative leadership within the Army. Tillis argued that Hegseth fails to retain talent, creating a leadership gap.

Tillis said, “I urge the President to find a new leader at the Pentagon who will retain and empower our military talent rather than diminish it.” He accused Hegseth of poor management, suggesting he avoids competent leadership.

Responding Statements

The War Department declined comments regarding the situation. Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly defended the administration’s military leadership. She highlighted their focus on military readiness and operations.

“The President has complete trust in Secretary Hegseth, who is doing an incredible job leading the Pentagon,” Kelly stated in response to criticisms.

Driscoll’s Closing Remarks

Driscoll shared a statement via the Secretary of the Army’s X account, marking the end of his service. He cited modernization efforts and support from President Trump and Secretary Hegseth as key achievements during his tenure.

Driscoll mentioned, “Tomorrow is my last full day in the role,” acknowledging it as an honor to serve.

Underlying Concerns

A source close to Driscoll’s resignation suggested conflicts over Army modernization and readiness efforts clashed with Hegseth’s dismissal of involved Generals. This ongoing tension ultimately influenced Driscoll’s resignation decision.
