Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream had a mixed night in Friday’s game against the Portland Fire. The forward, only 24 years old, scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. She also added six assists and two steals, continuing her impressive performance in the league.
Reese achieved a significant milestone, becoming the fastest WNBA player to record 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 250 assists in her career. Her double-double numbers also set a WNBA record.
“Angel Reese recorded her 28th double-double of the season on Friday night, tying her for most in a single WNBA season with five more games to play,” ESPN Insights stated.
However, despite the achievements, Reese faced a setback. In the fourth quarter, she received her eighth technical foul of the season. This resulted in an automatic one-game suspension, affecting her availability for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx unless the league overturns the decision.
The incident occurred with 8:45 remaining. Reese got into a tangle with Fire guard Carla Leite, whom she was defending. Video footage shows Reese pushing Leite as Dream guard Rhyne Howard made a 3-pointer. Reese shoved Leite again as they separated.
Dream head coach Karl Smesko defended Reese, expressing the intention to appeal the technical call. He was unsure whether the play warranted a technical foul.
“From my vantage point, it didn’t look like something that was tech worthy. So, hopefully, it’ll be rescinded, but I haven’t had the benefit of watching it on film yet or anything like that,” Smesko mentioned.
Smesko added that Reese had managed her temperament well throughout the season. He emphasized that he saw no issue with her conduct and hoped the technical foul would be withdrawn to enable her to play against Minnesota.
