Michigan Wolverines Coach Faces Allegations from Former University of Utah Players

Kyle Whittingham, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, is facing serious allegations from former players at the University of Utah, where he previously coached. Six players claim they were pressured to return from injuries before they had adequately healed.

Defensive end Van Fillinger, along with five other former players, spoke to Jason Batacao of The Salt Lake Tribune. They allege that during their tenure with the Utah Utes from 2020 to 2024, they faced undue pressure to play despite injuries. Fillinger, as an example, recounted his experience with a broken tibia, initially planning to take a redshirt season for recovery.

Coach [Lewis Powell] came into rehab one day and he said, ‘Hey, Van, coach [Kyle] Whittingham is not going to let you redshirt,’ Fillinger said.

Fillinger explained that he felt compelled to play after being told he might be kicked off the team if he refused. When questioned, a spokesperson for the Michigan Wolverines directed inquiries to the University of Utah, stating that Whittingham relied on medical team guidance while coaching at Utah.

The University of Utah’s Athletic Department and Health Service emphasized their commitment to student-athlete health, stating that the safety and success of students are paramount. They regularly assess their procedures to ensure compliance with both University and national standards. The department encourages athletes to express concerns if they feel mistreated or if their injuries are not taken seriously.

Another former player, Jaylon Glover, shared a slightly different perspective, suggesting discrepancies between the training staff and coaches. He felt that the emphasis was often on getting players back onto the field as soon as possible.
