Za’Darius Smith’s Decision: Browns or Falcons?

Reports suggested that Za’Darius Smith might join the Cleveland Browns, but there are complications. Smith, a seasoned NFL player with 70 1/2 career sacks, voiced skepticism about the news.

Over the weekend, The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com indicated that Smith was set to sign with the Browns. They mentioned that negotiations could conclude on Monday. However, Smith had other plans and was, in fact, working out with the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith took to social media to clear the air, stating, “I haven’t signed yet,” and indicated another workout with a different team. This created a stir as two NFL teams showed interest in him.

The Browns, with whom Smith played two seasons, appear keen to re-sign him. He previously achieved 10 sacks and 27 quarterback hits with the team. Meanwhile, the Falcons, experiencing a shortage in their pass rush, are interested too, particularly under their new coach Kevin Stefanski.

Stefanski has a history with Smith from his time with the Browns. This adds another layer to the situation as the Falcons try to secure Smith, intensifying the competition with the Browns.

Adding urgency to Atlanta’s pursuit, their team has suffered setbacks. Jalon Walker’s ACL injury and James Pearce’s suspension for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy leave gaps in their defense.

Browns coach Todd Monken refrained from discussing the situation, diverting to general manager Andrew Berry for comments. Meanwhile, the Falcons’ immediate needs make Smith’s decision crucial.
