Wynonna Judd Opens Up About Family Struggles and New Album

Wynonna Judd is sharing her story, including parts her family might find painful. She revealed that she and her sister, Ashley Judd, are not speaking currently. Both are focusing on their lives separately. “We’re taking a break, which all families can relate to,” she explained to People magazine. “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”

While discussing her new album “The Hard Truth,” Wynonna talked about her complex relationship with her late mother, Naomi Judd, and family secrets. Wynonna’s album, set to release on October 2, dives deep into her journey through anger and forgiveness. “I feel like this is the most honest and vulnerable I’ve ever been,” Judd said about the album. “Some days I think, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ and other days I’m ready to share my testimony.”

The album was co-written with her husband, Cactus Moser, who encouraged her to be open. Naomi Judd’s battle with depression is a significant theme. Wynonna reflected, “I kept the secret, and I was devastated by it.” Her mother suffered from severe depression for many years before she died by suicide in April 2022 at age 76.

Wynonna gained fame alongside her mother as part of The Judds, defining country music in the 1980s. They achieved 20 Top 10 country hits, 14 of which went to number one, along with multiple Grammy and CMA Awards. Despite success, Wynonna describes their relationship as one with both deep love and turmoil. “There was a tremendous amount of love, a lot of drama but a lot of love,” she said.

She believes the new album is her most personal and acknowledges the revelations might have been difficult for Naomi to hear. Still, Wynonna insists she would have told her story even if her mother were alive. “It’s my story, and it’s my feelings,” she emphasized. While recognizing it could have been painful for Naomi, she added, “She knows me. I’m honest and up-front.”
