Comedian Bert Kreischer Reflects on Life-Altering Experiences and Sobriety

Bert Kreischer, a prominent comedian, recently shared how a frightening medical issue changed his life. At 53, Kreischer experienced severe leg pain that led him to the emergency room in January. Doctors identified a blood clot behind his knee and additional clots in his lungs. He began a recovery process on blood thinners and had to abstain from alcohol.

In March 2026, during his tour, a significant incident occurred. While traveling between North Dakota and Iowa, Kreischer’s bus suffered a tire blowout on Interstate 94 and his team switched to other buses. The next day, the first bus caught fire, but the driver escaped unscathed.

Kreischer shared that this health scare indirectly saved his life. His driver later commented, ‘Old-school Bert would have been drinking. The bus caught fire in seconds.’ Kreischer realized that without his lifestyle change, he might have been in the bus during the fire.

Reflecting on fate, Kreischer appreciates life more, understanding how luck plays a role. He referenced Seth MacFarlane’s missed flight during the Sept. 11 attacks, highlighting how chance events can have dramatic effects.

The Free Bert star has noticeably changed his health journey since his blood clot diagnosis, losing weight and addressing lifestyle habits. He shared his daughter Ila’s comment about his weight, ‘Buddy, I think you lost your belly button,’ motivating him towards a healthier path.

Guidance from family and doctors pushed Kreischer to improve his health. He committed to losing weight, discovering his body fat percentage was 40%. He aimed to lose 95 pounds using medication to combat visceral fat.

The ordeal revealed mortality to Kreischer in a stark way. ‘I felt like a snowman in March,’ he admitted, acknowledging vulnerability. His sober lifestyle now forces him to confront feelings directly, without alcohol.

Kreischer’s comedy persona, inspired by real events, involves hard-partying themes but recent changes bring a more grounded approach.

Discussing the Free Bert TV series during an Emmy-event, Kreischer noted his content’s unexpected success and renewal for a second season. The series explores the comedic and personal life of Kreischer navigating family and social circles in Beverly Hills.

About the next season, Kreischer expressed hopes for maintaining the show’s humor and appeal, acknowledging the pressure to meet expectations.
