Washington Commanders Choose Stefon Diggs Over Brandon Aiyuk for Wide Receiver Role

The Washington Commanders have set their sights on enhancing their wide receiver options. They had two seasoned veterans to consider: Stefon Diggs and Brandon Aiyuk.

Stefon Diggs has been part of three different teams over the past three seasons. Despite this, he managed to achieve two 1,000-yard seasons. Brandon Aiyuk, however, signed a significant contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2024 but faced injuries and did not participate in the 2025 season. His recent actions have raised concerns, making him a potential risk for teams.

Stefon Diggs’ Legal Victory and New Opportunity

Recently, Diggs was found not guilty on charges of strangulation and assault. This development clears his path to focus on his career as he becomes a free agent. As reported by NFL Network, Diggs is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Commanders, avoiding a minimum salary agreement.

Diggs will enter a receiver group that includes veterans such as Terry McLaurin, Treylon Burks, Luke McCaffery, and Dyami Brown. As these players contribute, the team will also groom rookie Antonio Williams for future success. Diggs’ signing is beneficial for the Commanders, as he hails from the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) and is returning from his first fully healthy offseason in years. Additionally, he will have the advantage of playing alongside a skilled quarterback, Jayden Daniels.

Challenges for Brandon Aiyuk

Meanwhile, Aiyuk faces difficulties. His recent conduct has been troubling for NFL teams evaluating his potential. Some of his antics have included filming himself driving over 100 MPH near the 49ers training facility and failing to report there for much of last season. An arrest warrant related to alleged speeding followed, and he mocked the 49ers by posting a racetrack video.

Aiyuk also published a video scattering cash on the floor as a way to taunt the 49ers for their financial commitment to him. Perhaps most controversial, Aiyuk made light of a recent accident involving coach Kyle Shanahan. The incident resulted in Shanahan suffering multiple injuries, affecting his duties at training camp.

Despite his actions, Aiyuk showed interest in joining the Commanders, motivated by his past successful collaboration with Daniels at Arizona State. Initially, the Commanders demonstrated some interest in Aiyuk, but their interest has since diminished. Now, Aiyuk will have to respond to the news that the Commanders are pursuing another direction.

This situation may offer Aiyuk an opportunity to reconsider his actions and the impact they have on his professional image.
