The United States men’s national team is preparing for a critical World Cup match against Belgium. The team faces a major challenge after losing one of its standout players. Folarin Balogun, considered a top performer in this World Cup, will miss the Round of 16 game. He received a red card during a previous match against Bosnia.

The incident occurred when Balogun and an opponent tangled while going for the ball. In the process, Balogun inadvertently stepped on the opponent’s ankle, causing an awkward fall. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the play, ultimately labeling it as ‘serious.’ This decision led to Balogun’s ejection from the game and suspension for the next match against Belgium.

Referee Raphael Claus of Brazil issued the red card during the match in Santa Clara, California. The United States had to play the rest of that game with ten men. As a result, the team’s hopes of advancing against Belgium now rest without Balogun.

In his first comments post-ejection, Balogun expressed disagreement with the decision. ‘First and foremost, it was totally unintentional,’ he stated. Balogun added that he believed a yellow card would have been more appropriate. ‘It’s something that I have to accept and move forward from,’ he said.

Balogun also shared the emotional toll of the experience, stating, ‘There’s been lots of different emotions.’ Despite the setback, he stressed the importance of staying calm and serving as a role model for young fans. ‘We have to show them the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust,’ he noted.

According to World Cup regulations, decisions regarding facts connected with play are final and not open to protest. Article 10.5 dictates that any player sent off with a red card will be automatically suspended from their next match.

FIFA confirmed Balogun’s suspension would only apply to the Belgium game. Should the United States win, Balogun will be eligible to return for the quarterfinals.
