Recently, the Cubs added veteran left-hander Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Iowa. Hoyer acknowledged the scarcity of teams willing to trade players at this point, stating, “We’ll keep making small moves and patch holes.” These incremental additions could lead to significant improvements over time.

On the field, the Cubs faced a tough game against the St. Louis Cardinals, resulting in a 17-1 loss. New acquisition, left-hander David Peterson, struggled, allowing ten runs in 3 2/3 innings. The upcoming draft is also consuming time for front offices, which means any significant pitching deals might be delayed. Hoyer noted that the current standings and potential future lockout in 2027 add complexities to trade decisions.

Drew Pomeranz, previously a reliable reliever in 2025 with a 2.17 ERA, aims to return to form. His acquisition was part of minor-league deal transactions with hopes to fill the bullpen gap left by Hoby Milner’s recent surgery.
