USIEA Founder and President Heather Johnston, in a discussion with Fox News Digital, reflected on the 15th anniversary of the organization. She recalled an early interaction with then-Majority Leader Eric Cantor, where she presented objectives for advancing educational trips to Israel. Johnston noted Cantor’s surprise, as he had been searching for a viable leader for such tours.
Impact of Early Tours
The organization’s first educational tour included five members of the House Armed Services Committee. During the visit, lawmakers were introduced to the Iron Dome missile defense system, which was newly developed at the time. It was so recent that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had to declassify the technology for the tour.
The lawmakers were significantly impressed, which led to efforts in Congress to increase funding for the Iron Dome system. Just weeks after returning to Washington, the committee members engaged with 54 colleagues, resulting in a tripling of the Iron Dome’s budget within three months.
