Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Venezuela’s National Day, marking the 215th anniversary of independence from Spain. He emphasized the Trump administration’s prompt response to recent earthquakes that claimed thousands of lives in Venezuela. Rubio expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people during this challenging time.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, struck on June 24, severely impacting coastal La Guaira, north of Caracas. The death toll has risen to nearly 3,000 with ongoing rescue efforts hindered by diminishing hopes of finding survivors.

International efforts include U.S. rescue teams, highlighted by Rubio, engaging in search and recovery operations. Teams from Fairfax County, Los Angeles County, Miami-Dade, and City of Miami joined the relief efforts, showcasing U.S. support for Venezuela’s recovery.

Despite efforts, the Venezuelan government faces criticism for its sluggish response to the disaster. Complaints about inefficiency while communities have stepped up to assist victims are widespread.

President Trump had earlier declared his intention to oversee Venezuela’s recovery following Nicolas Maduro’s ousting. However, economic challenges persist under Delcy Rodríguez’s temporary leadership, hindering recovery plans.

Trump reaffirmed U.S. commitment to assist Venezuela, deploying Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART) alongside other support measures. Collaborative efforts include aerial damage assessments and cooperation with international partners to provide necessary aid.

While USAID previously played a key role in global humanitarian aid, its closure a year ago has limited direct U.S. assistance.
