The U.S. Men’s National Team celebrated a significant win against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night. However, a notable issue looms over their upcoming match against Belgium.

Folarin Balogun, the team’s key striker, will miss the game due to a controversial red card received during the Bosnian match’s second half. This incident has resulted in his suspension. Nevertheless, there was some relief for the U.S. when FIFA confirmed on Friday the suspension would only cover one match.

FIFA’s Decision

The decision not to extend the suspension beyond one match is a favorable outcome for the team. While it was unlikely for FIFA to impose additional games, the formal announcement confirmed the limited suspension. There is no way for the U.S. to appeal this decision, leaving them to hope for the best.

Balogun provided his first public comments after the suspension decision was announced. He stated, “It’s important for me to say, first and foremost, it was totally unintentional. The choice of the referee was his choice. I don’t think it was the correct choice. I think a yellow card would’ve been fair, due to it not being intentional.” He added, “It’s something that happened; we have to move forward, and I have to accept it.”

Upcoming Match Against Belgium

Balogun’s absence will be felt in Monday’s match against Belgium in Seattle. He leads the team with three goals in the tournament. However, if the U.S. achieves an unexpected victory against Belgium, they can look forward to Balogun’s return for the quarterfinals.
