Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu is stepping back from figure skating competitions for the 2026-27 season. She aims to return for the 2027-28 season to explore new ways to enhance her skills.
Liu announced her decision publicly, stating she would not be competing this season. Her focus will be on artistic growth and maturing her skating technique.
“While people are announcing programs, imma take this time to announce that I will not be competing this season,” Liu posted. “I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve. It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth. I’m gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things & whatnot. So fear not, I’ll be back, & in the meantime I’ll be rooting for my teammates near & far. See yall soon!!”
In a recent interview, Liu expressed her desire to continue training and improve her craft, focusing on overall artistry and technical elements like spins and jumps. She plans to cheer on her competitors from afar during her break.
Liu explained the decision as logical, emotional, and physically sensible, acknowledging she would miss international competitions but expects more opportunities in the future. Her coaches Phillip DiGuglielmo and Massimo Scali supported her decision-making process, understanding her need to step back.
Liu’s popularity is soaring, her coach noted, while off-ice opportunities have kept her busy. Since winning Olympic gold in Milan in 2025, she performed in the Stars on Ice tour and engaged in various high-profile ventures, including meeting Taylor Swift and appearing in a music video by Laufey.
Previously, Liu retired after her Olympic debut at age 16 but returned in the 2024-25 season with renewed passion for skating. She achieved a major milestone by winning the U.S. women’s singles world title for the first time since 2006.
Reflecting on her journey, Liu expressed gratitude for the exciting experiences and supportive team. Originally scheduled for Skate America in Washington, her absence is notable, but the event will feature other talented skaters.
Liu remains committed to supporting her teammates throughout her break. She plans to stay connected with the sport and embrace opportunities to provide support as needed.
