U.S.-Iran Tensions Rise Amid Unverified Claims and Military Actions

Published: Aug 31, 2026, 04:01 AM EDT

President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video that seemingly shows explosions on Iran’s Kharg Island on his Truth Social platform. Despite this depiction, Iranian sources have not confirmed any such U.S. military action over the weekend.

“Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!!” Trump stated in his post on Sunday night.

Kharg Island is strategically vital for Iran, situated 15 miles from the mainland, and is responsible for 90 percent of the country’s oil exports. This makes any threat to the island crucial for Iran’s already strained economy.

The weekend saw renewed strikes between Washington and Tehran for the first time since late July. The U.S. aims to leverage economic pressure and sanctions to push Iran towards a diplomatic deal.

Hamid Bovard, the chief of the National Iranian Oil Company, responded to Trump’s post by calling it “laughable.” He assured Iranian media that operations on Kharg Island proceed as usual.

The U.S. Central Command, overseeing Middle East operations, did not report any attack on Kharg Island. It disclosed “limited, precise action” targeting Iranian minelaying activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for U.S. CENTCOM, reported strikes on two Iranian launchers located on Larak Island within the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s military claimed it retaliated by launching ballistic missile attacks on two Jordanian air bases, causing “heavy damage.”

Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that a tanker was halted in the southern Strait of Hormuz after it was hit by two naval mines.

This situation is developing, with updates to follow.
