The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defense equipment to Ukraine. This decision was announced in a congressional notification and involves a Foreign Military Sale of air defense development upgrades and related equipment and services to the Ukrainian government.
Ukraine aims to purchase various defense systems, including S-300 Clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, the Range-Extended Air Defense Laser Guided Rocket missile systems, and additional launchers, counter-drone radars, trailers, and spare parts. These acquisitions would be funded through European contributions and U.S. Foreign Military Financing from the prior administration.
Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, has recently faced a surge in Russian attacks, creating challenges for its air defense systems due to ammunition shortages. In response, the State Department’s proposal is now pending congressional review.
President Trump has expressed his intention to urge European nations to repay the aid provided to Ukraine during Joe Biden’s administration. He has consistently demanded greater financial contributions from Europe in supporting Ukraine.
On Friday, President Trump signed a legislative bill imposing new sanctions on Russia. This bill aims to pressure Russia over its ongoing military actions in Ukraine. The legislation targets Russia’s energy and defense sectors, including President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials.
Dmitry Medvedev, serving as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, criticized the sanctions. On Telegram, he suggested that Russia should respond with “military deterrence,” though specific actions were not detailed.
