The primary elections held recently marked significant victories for candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump. In South Carolina, Sen. Darline Graham emerged victorious in the Republican Senate primary runoff, defeating Rep. Ralph Norman. The victory solidifies Graham’s position as she seeks a full six-year term after her appointment by Gov. Henry McMaster.
Trump’s endorsement played a pivotal role in Graham’s campaign, with Trump actively supporting her through rallies and significant super PAC contributions. Despite skepticism around the Graham family name, linked to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, Darline Graham managed to overcome doubts among the state’s conservative base.
Meanwhile, in Oklahoma, NBC News projects that former state Sen. Mike Mazzei won the Republican primary runoff for governor. Supported by Trump, Mazzei narrowly beat state Attorney General Gentner Drummond, showcasing the influence of Trump’s endorsements. Trump’s proactive campaigning against Drummond highlighted the competitive nature of the GOP gubernatorial race in Oklahoma.
In addition to Republican contests, the Democratic Senate primary runoff in Oklahoma saw Nurse N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas secure a win, representing the democratic socialist wing of the party. Despite being outspent, Thomas defeated attorney Jim Priest. She now faces GOP Rep. Kevin Hern in the forthcoming general election.
Georgia’s special election concluded with Everton Blair defeating Marcye Scott in a runoff to serve the remainder of the late Rep. David Scott’s term. Blair, initially trailing in previous rounds, led with a decisive margin in the latest votes.
“I think the most important thing to me about the election is someone with experience,” said Carey Roof, a voter in South Carolina.
Throughout these races, Trump’s endorsement showcased its impactful role, varying by state and candidate. Speculation persists regarding whether Darline Graham will face similar skepticism as her brother did with primary voters. However, the recent victories illustrate the ongoing resonance of Trump’s political influence.
