U.S. and Nigerian Forces Target ISIS Fighters in Nigeria

U.S. and Nigerian forces have conducted another military strike targeting ISIS fighters in Nigeria. This operation was announced by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), following a recent successful mission that eliminated a prominent ISIS leader.

AFRICOM reported that these new strikes were coordinated with Nigeria’s government and took place on Monday. While evaluations of the operation continue, AFRICOM confirmed that no U.S. or Nigerian personnel were harmed.

The removal of these terrorists diminishes the group’s capacity to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the U.S. and our partners.

This operation follows President Donald Trump’s announcement that U.S. and Nigerian forces eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki. Described as ISIS’s second-in-command globally, al-Minuki was believed to be hiding in Africa. Trump commented on Truth Social, stating that al-Minuki would no longer be able to terrorize Africa or plan attacks on Americans.

AFRICOM reaffirmed that no harm came to U.S. or Nigerian forces during Sunday’s operation on May 17, 2026.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed the targeted elimination of al-Minuki and other ISIS leaders, highlighting a months-long mission to locate and defeat this top ISIS operative in Nigeria, who had been responsible for the deaths of Christians.

Furthermore, the U.S. military has maintained relentless pressure on ISIS, evidenced by ten strikes against more than 30 targets in Syria since an ambush in December resulting in U.S. casualties.

U.S. Central Command also conducted strikes against ISIS targets in Syria in February, as part of an ongoing effort to dismantle the terrorist network.
