Twitch streamer Hasan Piker recently revealed that Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed requested him to support El-Sayed’s campaign. This revelation followed significant criticism aimed at El-Sayed for collaborating with Piker.
Piker mentioned in an interview with Semafor columnist David Weigel that the idea to be involved in the campaign was proposed by El-Sayed. Piker noted, “He asked me to stump for him, and I had not considered that ever before. I’d never really delivered a speech like that before.”
During a content creator event supporting El-Sayed, Piker more actively engaged in political activities, having earlier been involved with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign. However, Piker observed that campaigning for El-Sayed attracted more significant criticism from establishment Democrats and organizations like Third Way.
Piker shared, “I didn’t realize how much the media would think that this is different. I had no idea that in the mindset of people in D.C., in the mindset of establishment media, doing a rally with a politician was apparently far more consequential.” He explained the backlash caught him off-guard, given his history of collaboration with El-Sayed.
Fox News Digital sought comments from El-Sayed’s campaign. El-Sayed, who has faced scrutiny for collaborating with Piker due to the latter’s controversial statements, has actively tried to distance himself. This effort intensified after Piker’s remarks concerning Jewish Americans and antisemitism gained attention.
Addressing reporters, El-Sayed dismissed discussions focused on Piker, emphasizing, “I don’t ever want my comments to hurt anybody’s feelings. It’s important to me that people understand that I take seriously the pain of all communities in this state.” He stressed the need to focus on critical political issues rather than “a social media person in California.”
Following comments related to an attack on a Michigan synagogue, El-Sayed offered an apology, saying to Fox News Digital, “To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention. We condemned that terrorist attack outright.”
