Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, captured by U.S. forces earlier this year, has posted photos from inside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. This marks the first visual evidence of him in custody since his January capture.
The photos, shared on Maduro’s social media, depict him in a gray sweatsuit and white sneakers, appearing thinner. He conveyed messages of hope and resilience to his supporters, emphasizing confidence and strength amidst his legal challenges. Maduro assured his supporters that Venezuela would be reborn.
Maduro’s message included expressions of gratitude for the support he’s received, stating, “I send these photos as a small gift to all my grandsons and granddaughters, to the boys and girls, and to all the noble people who love us.” He added that the love and prayers shared by his supporters reach him and are sources of strength.
Maduro also mentioned his wife, Cilia, who is in the U.S. facing similar charges. Both are expected to stand trial in New York in June 2027, with severe penalties possible if convicted. Their defense has pleaded not guilty.
These updates arrive shortly after former President Donald Trump’s announcement of a significant agreement with Venezuela, granting U.S. control over a substantial portion of Venezuelan oil reserves. This is seen as a potential boon for American oil amidst tensions with Iran.
Throughout his detention, Maduro reportedly spends much of his time reading the Bible. He has limited contact with outside individuals, amounting to approximately 510 minutes per month.
