DUBLIN — During a meeting on Saturday with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, President Donald Trump expressed his support for Irish reunification, a position that strays from longstanding U.S. neutrality on this contentious issue.

The meeting took place in Dublin with Trump stating his admiration for the idea of reunification. His comments mark a significant deviation from the traditional U.S. stance on one of the United Kingdom and Ireland’s most politically charged topics.

Trump was in Ireland en route to the Irish Open golf tournament at his venue, Trump International Golf Links. The discussion with Taoiseach Micheál Martin further highlighted Trump’s openness to addressing sensitive international issues in distinctive ways.
