A tree-trimming worker in Minnesota has been charged with manslaughter following a tragic incident in which he allegedly used machinery to fatally injure his coworker. The incident occurred in Apple Valley, involving 34-year-old Christopher Boone Crimmins and his coworker, Tyler Anthony Lynch, 26, according to a criminal complaint filed by Dakota County.
Authorities reported that Crimmins was operating a hydraulic grapple on a truck while Lynch was on the ground clearing branches. Police responding to the scene found Lynch with serious head trauma and substantial blood loss, leading to his death at the scene.
The accident happened as Crimmins and Lynch reportedly engaged in playful behavior with their shadows cast by the sunlight. Crimmins allegedly maneuvered the grapple to align with Lynch’s shadow, not realizing the grapple was physically approaching Lynch’s head. Intending to manipulate shadows, Crimmins inadvertently moved the grapple too close. He then operated the grapple in a manner that resulted in Lynch’s fatal injuries.
Witnesses confirmed seeing the grapple impact Lynch’s head as it moved. Officials noted blood on the grapple, which was positioned directly above Lynch at the time of the accident. Authorities claim Crimmins acted negligently, creating an unreasonable risk and consciously taking chances that resulted in death.
Charged with second-degree manslaughter, Crimmins could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine if found guilty. He is currently held at Dakota County Jail with bail set at $40,000 without conditions or $20,000 with conditions.
