Tragic Shooting of Pennsylvania State University Student

A serious investigation is ongoing after a Pennsylvania State University student was fatally shot on what may have been an attempted armed robbery. Billy Schmidt, 22, lost his life not far from his home in Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., according to the Philadelphia Police Department. Responding officers found Schmidt on the street with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead at 1:47 a.m.

Billy’s father, Bill Schmidt, spoke to ABC7 about the incident. He revealed that his son had been at a bar with friends watching the NBA Finals. Security footage provided to the police shows Schmidt pleading for his phone before several gunshots took his life. The video captures a man discarding a cellphone and another person running around a corner pursued by Schmidt, who was then shot in the chest.

“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt anyone,” Bill Schmidt expressed. “It’s shocking that he was shot while chasing his stolen phone.”

Billy Schmidt was a senior at Pennsylvania State University. He was due to graduate in December. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. A neighbor is urging those with any information about the case to assist the police.

The neighbor conveyed, “I want justice. If anyone recognizes anything about the suspects, please come forward.”

In an emotional GoFundMe update, Billy’s sister, Anna Schmidt, described him as a treasured brother, friend, and community member. The family has raised over $48,000 following his tragic passing.
