WASHINGTON — A federal grand jury has indicted a Kentucky woman, Melissa Farris, with charges of intentionally damaging The World War II Memorial located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Farris, from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, will be arraigned next week on two felony counts. She was indicted on Thursday for allegedly destroying the veterans’ memorial and government property.
Attempts to contact Farris’s attorney for comment were unsuccessful as they did not respond to an email inquiry on Friday.
Farris is accused of spray painting the phrase “Clean hands dirty $” on the monument and filling a fountain with bubbles on August 13. She was released after her initial court appearance on August 17.
President Donald Trump shared his thoughts on the vandalism via social media, linking this incident to unfounded claims regarding damage to the nearby Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He posted on Truth Social saying, “Our beautiful World War II Memorial was just hit by Spray Painting Vandals. First the Reflecting Pool, now this.”
A case related to vandalism at the Reflecting Pool involved a former Olympian charged in late July, which the Justice Department later decided to dismiss, citing evidence that negated vandalism as the cause.
