A routine traffic stop on a Kentucky interstate turned deadly as state trooper Hayden Phillips, 30, was fatally shot. This tragic incident initiated a statewide manhunt, ending with the suspect in custody. Trooper Phillips leaves behind a wife and three young sons. U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner expressed the tragedy of the situation, stating, “We have a wife that expected her husband to come home. We have three little boys who don’t have a dad.”
Phillips was a dedicated officer serving the Kentucky State Police for three years, based in Post 3, Bowling Green. He graduated from Cadet Class 103 and was recognized by fellow troopers as Unit 369. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice because he served our community,” Bumgarner stated.
Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. vowed to pursue justice for Phillips. “We will seek justice for Hayden,” Burnett affirmed. He highlighted the difficulty of this moment for the agency, honoring Phillips’ commitment to duty.
State police initially reported a trooper-involved shooting on northbound I-65 near the 38-mile marker. They sought public assistance to locate a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama tag present during the shooting. A Blue Alert identified Emonnie Branch as the suspect, and Louisville Metro Police subsequently took Branch into custody. Branch faces charges for the murder of a first responder and will be returned to Warren County for trial.
Bumgarner emphasized the impact of the loss, asserting the Justice Department would support Kentucky prosecutors and investigators fully. Addressing Phillips’ family, Burnett promised unwavering support, stating, “You will not walk this path alone.” State police paid tribute to Phillips, expressing, “Rest Easy U/369. We have it from here.”
Governor Andy Beshear honored Phillips as a hero and devoted family man, urging the community to support his family. Several representatives, including Rep. Brett Guthrie and Rep. James Comer, extended their condolences, urging prayers for Phillips’ family and colleagues.
Country singer Lee Greenwood mourned Phillips’ loss, stating his unwavering support for law enforcement. As the community remembers Trooper Hayden Phillips, they honor his service and sacrifice.
