LeBron James recently addressed the media during the 76ers Media Day, showcasing his familiar persona. After a summer filled with speculation about his future, he opted out of his contract and made the move to Philadelphia, leaving his family behind on the West Coast to pursue another championship in the East.
“If we can do that, then we can be a great team,” he stated.
While he has yet to take the court in a Sixers jersey, James is already setting expectations and putting the onus on his new teammates. He expressed a clear goal:
“If we don’t do that, then we’ll be like, ‘Oh man, it was a great team on paper. We had a lot of great talent, and we lost in the second round.’ I don’t wanna do that. I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round, I know that for sure. So the work needs to be done, and I’m ready to put the work in.”
James also revealed he considered joining the New York Knicks, enticed by the idea of playing in Madison Square Garden. However, after the Knicks claimed a championship, he reconsidered, wary of the criticism akin to Kevin Durant’s previous moves.
In his words:
“I had visions of playing in [Madison Square] Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” LeBron said. “One of the best places I’ve ever played. I think it’s the No. 1 arena in the world, as far as for a basketball player. But after they beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it. Y’all wouldn’t have let me lay that down, at all.”
James acknowledged the Knicks’ success, praising Jalen Brunson and expressing satisfaction with his decision to join the 76ers.
The move raised questions about his role within the team. When asked about the leadership dynamic in Philadelphia, Jaylen Brown deflected the query.
James also engaged with the Philadelphia fan base:
“They know ball,” James said. “And if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to do, they’re going to let you hear it, and I’m excited about that.”
As he approaches his 24th NBA season, James remains confident in his abilities:
“The luxury of my game is that I can do everything,” James declared.
He expressed enthusiasm for energizing the Philadelphia fans and contributing to the team’s championship aspirations.
