A 20-year-old hiker tragically lost his life on Monday after falling from a 177-foot waterfall in Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park. Park officials described the event as a “horrific accident.” The man, who was visiting from out of state, reportedly left the marked trail to take a photo, crossing a barrier and moving over a creek directly above the waterfall.

The incident took place at South Falls, the tallest waterfall in the park, known for its large pool below. By approximately 6:30 p.m., the hiker fell into the pool. Nearby visitors attempted CPR while emergency responders made their way to the scene. Unfortunately, the young man passed away before they arrived. His identity has not been released.

The Marion County Medical Examiner and Marion County Search and Rescue managed the recovery of the body from the waterfall’s base. Unger Funeral Chapel later took custody of the remains. The unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of straying off-trail.

“It was a pretty horrific accident,” said Chris Gilliand, regional manager of Silver Falls State Park, describing the challenging situation.

Silver Falls State Park is famous for its Trail of Ten Falls, attracting numerous visitors with its spectacular series of waterfalls. South Falls is a highlight and allows hikers to experience the waterfall’s power from behind the cascade. It is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Oregon’s state parks.
