The New Ownership of The Skokie
Four arts professionals have taken over the historic Skokie Theatre, now known as The Skokie, located at 7924 N. Lincoln Ave. The new owners are Jose Pablo Cantillo and Kristi Cantillo, who alternate between Skokie and Greenville, South Carolina, along with Chris Matsakis and Monica Matsakis from Glenview. The venue has been a staple of live entertainment since 1912.
A Vision for Diverse Entertainment
According to Chris Matsakis, the group shares a passion for live performances and aims to create a community-focused space. The lineup will include a variety of acts such as comedy, theater, storytelling, improv, music, and jazz. There are also plans to enhance the theater’s film capabilities, enabling film festivals and live podcasts.
Community Support and Financial Backing
The Skokie Theatre recently received a $50,000 grant from the Village of Skokie’s Storefront Enhancement Program. Additionally, an online fundraising campaign on indiegogo.com surpassed its $25,000 goal, raising $30,365. The campaign will reopen shortly to gather additional funds for upgrading film equipment and adding a large-format screen.
Meet the Owners
Jose Pablo Cantillo brings extensive experience as an actor, producer, and writer, with credits like “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy.” Kristi Cantillo has taught ceramics in Los Angeles County and holds degrees in Fine Arts and Arts Education. Chris Matsakis, a finance student turned entrepreneur, founded and sold an e-commerce company, Deal Genius. Monica Matsakis, an actor and educator, has performed at storytelling events such as The Moth.
Future Plans for The Skokie
The quartet plans significant physical upgrades including decor updates, a refreshed lobby, and a bar and lounge area. They aim for the venue to stand out through diverse programming that resonates with contemporary audiences. Jose Pablo Cantillo notes a trend of younger patrons seeking live experiences and considers this a perfect time to reignite his passion for live performances.

While The Skokie’s full performance calendar is pending, there are plans for storytelling among other forms of entertainment. The owners emphasize filling the venue’s schedule with events that reflect audience interests, offering something unique in the local arts scene.
