At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, electric vehicles are in the spotlight for carbon-neutral technology, but hydrogen energy is making waves too. Hyundai is highlighting plans to use hydrogen energy. They aim to create vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells and aspire to help build a ‘hydrogen society’ by expanding energy production, storage, and transportation. According to José Muñoz, president of Hyundai Motor Co., the technology is ready and will soon become economically viable.
Bosch Mobility also announces an important step. The company plans to launch its first hydrogen combustion engine this year to cut global carbon emissions. Both Bosch and Hyundai are advancing in this field, supported by significant investments like the $7 billion from the U.S. government for hydrogen infrastructure development.
Innovations in Electric Vehicles
At CES 2024, Honda unveiled two concept vehicles: the “Saloon” and “Space-Hub.” These models represent the Zero Series approach. They focus on creating electric vehicles that are thin, light, and efficient by minimizing battery size and weight.
Kia revealed three electric vans capable of rapid body module transformation, intended for uses ranging from cargo to taxis. These vans will be produced in South Korea starting in 2025.
VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, introduced a new concept—a mid-size electric truck called the VF Wild.
Advancements in In-Car Technology
Mercedes-Benz presented updates to its infotainment systems. The enhancements include an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to personalize driver-car interactions. This AI will integrate with functions such as automated driving, seating comfort, data displays, and charging.
Meanwhile, automakers like Nissan, Ford’s Lincoln brand, and others are installing Google apps like Google Maps and Assistant in some of their vehicles this year. Porsche will begin offering these apps in 2025, and even Mercedes-Benz plans to integrate Google apps into its system.
Progress in Solid-State Batteries
At CES 2024, Honda elaborated on its plans with the Zero Series and broader EV developments. A significant focus is on the independent development of solid-state batteries. Honda Executive Vice President Shinji Aoyama disclosed their aim to use solid-state batteries in the Zero Series by the late 2020s.
Solid-state batteries are considered vital for the widespread commercialization of EVs. Currently, EVs typically use lithium-ion batteries, but these are fire-prone. Solid-state batteries are more stable and potentially more powerful. Mitsuru Kariya, who heads Honda’s EV tech research, noted that these batteries have higher energy density, allowing for smaller sizes yet maintaining strong outputs. This feature could significantly reduce EV weight and enhance fuel economy.
Honda is not alone in this endeavor. Toyota, another major player, has partnered with Japanese oil company Idemitsu for the production of solid-state battery technology.
