On June 19, authorities arrested former Olympian David Hearn for damaging property, alleging he tampered with the bluing lining. Trump quickly accused vandals of causing significant damage, yet provided no evidence. Repairs continued behind a newly-erected fence.
Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, supported Trump’s claims with strong rhetoric. Some criticized her as one of America’s most questionable prosecutors. Her history as Westchester County district attorney had been laden with inflammatory language, where she often disparaged defendants.
Pirro attempted to run for various political offices but found work with Fox News for 14 years. On July 2, Pirro criticized Hearn’s alleged vandalism at a press conference, only to dismiss the charges on July 31. She blamed the contractor’s inadequate work for the damages. Pirro asserted the Department of the Interior withheld important information. Yet doubts linger about her thoroughness in this investigation, as an experienced prosecutor about to bring felony charges should ensure credible and strong evidence. Questions remain about the level of investigation performed by her office after Hearn’s arrest.
Although Trump criticized Pirro for dismissing charges, blaming her for inadequacy, he downplays his own involvement in the situation. As stated by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Trump frequently identifies fabricated problems, promises self-made solutions, causes financial wastage, and then boasts of success despite failures.
