The Recapture of Beaufort Castle in Lebanon

Israeli forces have taken control of a critical hilltop position where the historical Beaufort Castle stands in southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli military, this operation is part of their most extensive invasion of Lebanon in decades. The capture of the Beaufort area, long seen as strategic, brings back vivid memories from both nations of the prolonged conflict during the nearly 20-year Israeli presence in southern Lebanon. This occupation ended in 2000 after fierce resistance from Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant organization.

Following the announcement by Israel, neither Hezbollah nor the Lebanese government issued an immediate response. This renewed clash sees Hezbollah continuing its guerrilla warfare against Israeli troops. Israeli authorities have mentioned potentially re-establishing a long-term security zone in Lebanon aimed at mitigating Hezbollah’s assaults.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the capture, calling it a “dramatic step” and affirmed that Israeli forces would persist in their progress within Lebanon. However, military analysts express skepticism about the strategy’s efficacy in thwarting Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks. Haim Har-Zahav, an Israeli author familiar with operations in the previous occupation, described this move as potentially leading Israel back into the same kind of drawn-out conflict with Hezbollah that he and many Israelis consider strategically faulty.
