The Future of Arctic Observations Without NOAA’s Support

For two decades, the Arctic Report Card has been a vital resource for information about the Alaska and Arctic environment. This initiative received support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to transform raw data into comprehensible insights for those interested in changes at the top of the world.

Have you pondered how sea ice variations or ocean temperature shifts affect marine debris in the Bering Strait? The Arctic Report Card has also provided understanding into phenomena such as the spread of beavers into northwest Alaska, the phenomenon of “rusting rivers,” and local observations of Bering Sea salmon populations.

The withdrawal of NOAA’s support does not mean the halt of these observations or the changes they track. Enthusiasts and researchers continue to document these critical environmental parameters. The community remains engaged in monitoring and analyzing shifts in their environment, ensuring that vital information is still accessible to Alaskans and beyond.
