The planned exhibition celebrating John Galliano’s work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has been canceled. The announcement follows backlash surrounding Galliano’s history of antisemitic and racist comments.
Galliano, a renowned British designer, shared his decision on social media. He stated that, after deep reflection, he believes it is best for the exhibition not to occur now. The Met confirmed the cancellation of the Spring 2027 exhibition dedicated to Galliano’s four-decade career.
The controversy stemmed from remarks Galliano made in 2010 and 2011, which led to his dismissal from Christian Dior in 2011 and a hate crime conviction in France.
Galliano expressed his remorse for the hurt his past comments caused, particularly to the Jewish and Asian communities.
Anna Wintour, Vogue’s longtime editor-in-chief and chief content officer at Condé Nast, supported Galliano’s decision. She described it as courageous and believes it’s the right choice.
Andrew Bolton, curator at The Met’s Costume Institute, emphasized the importance of museums addressing difficult histories transparently and carefully. He acknowledged the pain and concern the planned exhibition caused.
Opposition grew against the exhibit, with some donors threatening to withdraw their support. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, a senior Jewish official, vocally opposed the exhibition. She expressed satisfaction with the Met’s decision, stating it was right due to the harmful impact on the Jewish community.
Galliano played a significant role in transforming Dior during his 15-year tenure as creative director. He later became the creative director of Maison Margiela.
Lauren Sherman, a CBS News fashion contributor, remarked on Galliano’s innovative influence during his peak in the 1990s. She noted Wintour’s efforts to help Galliano re-enter the fashion industry.
Galliano was set to be the third living designer featured in a solo show at the Met’s Costume Institute. The Met plans to announce details of a new exhibition for spring and the 2027 Met Gala soon.
