After nearly 30 years of evading capture, a Texas woman accused of killing her 3-year-old daughter has been apprehended in Mexico. The arrest concludes a search that began in 1997 when she vanished before facing a capital murder trial.

The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office announced that 48-year-old Maria Narez was detained on Saturday. This was the result of coordinated international law enforcement efforts.

Narez had initially been arrested in Tarrant County in 1996 in relation to the death of her daughter, Kasandra L. White. According to records from FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, Narez allegedly caused the child’s death by shaking her, hitting her with an unknown object, and throwing her against a wall.

Court documents reveal that Narez’s bail was initially set at $500,000. However, it was reduced to $25,000 just one day after the complaint was made on December 4, 1996.

Her bond release conditions mandated no contact with minors under the age of 17, as well as electronic monitoring and monthly drug tests.

In April 1997, a grand jury indicted Narez for capital murder. Prosecutors stated their readiness for the trial. However, by August 28, 1997, Narez’s bondsman reported her as unreachable, prompting a judge to issue an arrest warrant.

Subsequently, the court docket noted Narez’s bond forfeiture on October 7, 1997, with another warrant issued, indicating that it remained unexecuted. Following this, Narez fled the country, becoming a fugitive for nearly three decades.

The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office emphasized its persistent efforts to bring Narez back to stand trial for her daughter’s death. Law enforcement agencies including Mexico Interpol, the U.S. Marshals Service’s Mexico Foreign Field Office, and others were instrumental in her capture.

Narez is anticipated to be extradited to Texas to face the capital murder charge.
