Encounter with Islamic Group
On February 2, Hunter-Lopez came across an Islamic booth at his high school run by four women from Why Islam? They were handing out hijabs, copies of the Quran, and pamphlets titled ‘Understanding Sharia’ to female students. Hunter-Lopez shared videos of this event on social media, bringing national attention to the issue.
Testimony and Threats
Rep. Chip Roy invited Hunter-Lopez to speak at the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution and Limited Government in a session titled ‘Sharia-Free America.’ During his testimony, Hunter-Lopez shared the threats he received, including messages threatening his life. Supported by Christian faith, he stated his opposition to Sharia law, arguing it conflicts with American values and constitutional rights.
‘Handing materials that present Sharia favorably to minors during the school day — without parental approval — risks normalizing ideas that undermine the very principles our public schools are supposed to uphold,’ Hunter-Lopez said.
Dispute Over School’s Stand
Wylie Independent School District (ISD) responded to the claims, stating their legal requirement to remain neutral regarding religion. They emphasized that the district does not operate Islamic prayer rooms or assign preference to any religious group.
Political and Religious Tensions
The hearing sparked a debate with Rep. Jamie Raskin questioning the need for special laws targeting religious populations. Hunter-Lopez challenged Raskin’s views, referencing America’s Christian roots. Conservatives praised Hunter-Lopez for his articulate defense of American principles.
Wylie ISD admitted to procedural errors in allowing the Islamic group on campus without proper verification. They updated policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Both Rep. Chip Roy and Rep. Keith Self launched the Sharia-Free America Caucus to address the perceived threat of Sharia influence. Roy acknowledged Hunter-Lopez’s bravery in confronting these influences in his community.
