Texas Faces Floods While Pacific Hurricanes Threaten Coasts

Livingston, Texas: Texas authorities rescued numerous individuals from cars, homes surrounded by floodwaters, and an assisted living facility on Wednesday. The aftermath of former Tropical Storm Edouard, now a tropical depression, resulted in nearly two feet of rain in some areas.

The National Weather Service indicated that heavy rains would persist in the eastern part of Texas until Thursday morning.

In the Pacific Ocean, three hurricanes were active, causing concerns for coastal areas.

Flooding Challenges in Hardin County

In Hardin County, about 85 miles northeast of Houston, flooding, downed trees, powerlines, debris, and power outages posed risks. Weather data showed the area received between 18 to 20 inches of rain over two days, compared to the average September rainfall of 5.51 inches.

Local schools and offices near the Louisiana border closed, and residents were advised to remain indoors.

“Edouard downs trees, floods roads, and leaves drivers stranded.”

The Hardin County emergency management office reported that 12 drivers needed rescue from flooded roads, two people were saved from a flooded house, and there was damage to about 10 structures. Thousands continued without electricity.

Power Outages in Jefferson County

In Jefferson County, the focus was on restoring power due to fallen trees and limbs from the storm, which had gusts reaching 90 mph. About 22,000 customers lacked electricity, half of the statewide total affected, according to poweroutage.com.

A resident, Grady Leger, described feeling vibrations from a downed power line near his Lumberton home, sparking a fire.

An assisted living facility faced damage in Hardin County, leading to the evacuation of 21 individuals. Images showed authorities wading through deep water to assist.

Edouard’s dissipation is anticipated by Thursday.

Pacific Ocean Hurricanes

Hurricane Marie intensified off southwest Mexico in the Pacific, noted by the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Coastal southwestern Mexico and the Baja California peninsula should expect swells from the storm soon, potentially extending to southern California over the weekend.

Satellite imagery displayed Hurricane Lowell, Hurricane Karina, and Tropical Storm Marie active in the Pacific.

Hurricane Lowell, temporarily a Category 5 storm and now Category 4, remained south of Hawaii. Swells from Lowell are projected to affect Hawaii starting Wednesday.

“Swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”

Hurricane Karina reached Category 4 strength and is expected to weaken in the coming days.
