Cassandra Wilson: Celebrated Jazz Singer Passes Away

NEW YORK — Cassandra Wilson, the renowned jazz singer, songwriter, and producer, has died at the age of 70. Wilson, who earned two Grammy Awards for her influential work in jazz, passed away in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, confirmed by Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard.

Recognized as America’s top singer by Time magazine in 2001, Wilson was admired for her distinctive voice that challenged the limits of traditional jazz. Her contralto delivered a soulful sound that resonated across various music genres such as blues, folk, pop, R&B, and country. Jon Batiste, in his eulogy, noted that Wilson’s voice was deeply rooted in the South.

A statement by her manager, shared with jazz radio station WBGO, expressed profound sadness on Wilson’s passing. “Cassandra Wilson transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager,” it read.

From Jackson to Global Fame

Cassandra Wilson was born in Jackson to musician Herman B. Fowlkes and teacher Mary Fowlkes. Her passion for music was evident from a young age as she listened to Motown, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. Wilson began piano lessons at six and played clarinet in marching bands. She performed in coffeehouses and cover bands while attending Millsaps College and Jackson State University.

In the early 1980s, Wilson honed her craft under jazz masters in New Orleans before relocating to New York City. She joined Steve Coleman’s M-Base Collective, where she became the principal vocalist. Her unique voice led to four Grammy nominations and two awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 1997 for “New Moon Daughter” and 2009 for “Loverly.”

Wilson made significant contributions to jazz music, including a memorable concert at the Apollo Theater in 2015 to honor the 100th birthday of Billie Holiday, an iconic jazz vocalist. Her final album, “Coming Forth by Day,” was released the same year as a tribute to Holiday.

In 2022, Wilson was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, one of the most prestigious honors for jazz musicians in the U.S.

Tributes and Legacy

Jon Batiste paid homage to Wilson on Instagram, acknowledging her unique vocal tone and ability to combine folkloric, R&B, and diasporic music with experimental and popular genres. “Her Mississippi heritage was always present no matter how expansive her artistry evolved,” he remarked.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn expressed sorrow over the loss of Wilson as an extraordinary native daughter. “Cassandra Wilson carried the sound, spirit, and history of Mississippi with her wherever her music reached,” he stated, emphasizing her work’s ability to connect people and generations.
