Overview of the Hurricanes
Three hurricanes are currently active in the Pacific Ocean ahead of Labor Day weekend. These storms, Lowell, Karina, and Marie, each have unique characteristics and potential impacts, particularly concerning coastal conditions.
Hurricane Lowell
Lowell is currently the most powerful of the three hurricanes. Located around 440 miles south of Hilo, Hawaii, Lowell is a Category 4 storm with sustained winds reaching 155 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Lowell will likely maintain this intensity for several days. As Lowell moves west at 10 mph, fluctuations in its intensity are expected.
Hurricane Karina
Karina also holds Category 4 strength and is situated approximately 1,325 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. With maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, Karina is moving west-northwest at 10 mph. While a gradual weakening trend is anticipated, Karina is expected to stay a hurricane through the weekend.
Hurricane Marie
Marie is presently a Category 1 hurricane, centered 375 miles southwest of Baja California’s southern tip. With sustained winds of 80 mph, it moves west-northwest at 10 mph. Strengthening is anticipated through Friday, followed by weakening over the weekend. Despite remaining offshore, Marie could still affect coastal areas.
Impact on the U.S.
For the U.S., the primary concern is the potential for dangerous ocean conditions. Lowell’s swells are expected to impact Hawaii, leading to life-threatening surf and rip currents. Marie’s swells could reach Southern California later in the holiday weekend, raising risks for beach activities. Karina currently poses the least threat, with no land hazards reported.
Monitoring and Safety Precautions
Although none of the hurricanes are expected to make direct landfall in the U.S., the presence of three hurricanes in the Pacific basin is unusual. Residents and vacationers in affected areas are urged to stay updated on local forecasts and beach hazard announcements. Dangerous surfing conditions can occur far from a hurricane’s center and pose significant risks.
