Summer NFL training camps are often intense as players compete for roster spots amid sweltering heat. Joint practices between teams can amplify tensions, leading to altercations. Such was the case when the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints clashed during their session in Oxnard, California.
During the practice, fights broke out between players. This included a brawl featuring Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Sam Williams and Saints tight end Moliki Matavao. The skirmishes escalated with multiple players exchanging punches.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer jokingly referred to himself as being in charge of a “fight club” after the practice. While not advisable, players resorted to removing helmets during these exchanges. Saints receiver Ronnie Bell and Cowboys players were involved in several scuffles, with helmets being thrown across the field.
An incident involving Saints tight end Brock Rechsteiner showcased a wrestling move on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. Rechsteiner, following his WWE Hall of Famer father Scott Steiner’s footsteps, used a Suplex move. Additionally, Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku and cornerback Caelen Carson were seen throwing punches as well. The altercations culminated in Cowboys and Saints players hurling each other’s helmets.
Saints linebacker Pete Werner expressed a preference for protecting teammates but emphasized the need for smarter decisions. Werner noted the importance of mutual protection but stressed maintaining control during practices.
Coaches desire disciplined practices to hone skills and prepare players, not to engage in such brawls. These joint sessions are meant to replace preseason games for veterans to practice against opposing starters. Despite this, control is not always maintained, as observed here.
Coach Schottenheimer described the events as “unfortunate” and “disappointing,” believing the team did not achieve the practice objectives. Amid this tension, the joint practice ended without resolutions, and there won’t be a rematch between the two teams the following day. The Saints are set to practice with the Rams later.
